Drug and alcohol misuse
Police Alcohol Diversion Program and associated services
Dandenong Police run an alcohol diversion program that aims to break the cycle of alcohol related crimes by addressing the underlying causes and diverting offenders into appropriate treatment and support. Our partnership with Victoria Police involves direct referrals from police and magistrates. Our AAC program assists clients when dealing with offences as a result of drinking in public and associated crimes. This includes assessment, education relating to substance misuse, as well as developing educational and employment pathways. Importantly, our program also works to reconnect clients with their families and significant others.
The Dandenong Police – Alcohol Diversion Program (with the help of AAC) received the VicHealth award in 2016.
Self referral and by community
AAC receives self and family-referrals of clients experiencing substance misuse. Some referrals also come to AAC through ex-clients. AAC is dedicated to providing a confidential, non-judgemental and supportive service for these people.
Alcohol and other drug assessment
Our qualified forensic psychologist, social worker and mental health clinician carry out initial and ongoing confidential wellbeing assessments. If necessary, clients are referred to our local GP and SECADA, who may then refer clients to the Monash Residential Withdrawal Unit. We also receive referrals from ACSO via the Dandenong Police Alcohol Diversion Program.
Case managers are trained and sensitive to cultural perceptions and differences that exist within African and other CALD communities. AAC considers the inclusion of the extended family in ongoing client support and care as paramount.
Education leads to awareness. A Medicine of Addiction specialist, our mental health clinician and AAC case managers provide non-judgemental substance misuse education. This focuses on teaching clients the negative effects of using substances, harm reduction strategies, treatment and recovery.
Further Referral for treatment to Other Agencies
